Bothered by filthy toilets, stinking coaches and soiled bed linen in trains? The northern railways promise to end all that in 2012. Expect neat compartments in Delhi-bound Shatabdi and Rajdhani trains and on-board housekeeping staff to clean toilets every time they are used. Shatabdi trains originating from Delhi have reserved toilets for women in each coach.
"We were getting complaints that there should be separate toilets for women. To begin with, we have reserved toilets for women in Shatabdi trains and the feedback is good. We may replicate this service in other high-end trains as well," said Ashwani Lohani, divisional railway manager (Delhi division), northern railways.
The Delhi division has also started full-fledged on-board housekeeping staff equipped with modern toolkits on all Shatabdis. The service will be soon extended to Rajdhanis.
The cleaning work has been outsourced to a private agency. To check foul smell, the house keeping staff will spray room fresheners in compartments and mop the floors regularly.
