A 19-year-old domestic help was arrested in south Delhi for stealing to realise his dream of building his own house, the police said on Tuesday.

Identified as Vishnu, a native of Palwal in Haryana, he was arrested for his involvement in three cases of burglary and motor vehicle theft in Vasant Kunj, said Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south).

“He was arrested on a complaint filed by Salma Zaidi, who claimed that her house was ransacked on June 14 when she returned home from office. Jewellery, foreign currency, four mobile phones and other gadgets were found stolen from the house,” Sharma said.

The police claimed that the thief had entered the house from the balcony. Subsequently, investigations based on electronic surveillance helped the police reach him. When questioned, Vishnu, who was working as a domestic servant at a flat in the same area for the last two years, said he had committed the crime as he was in need of money to buy a plot.

“He climbed the water pipe and reached the balcony at the second floor to gain access to the house. After committing the theft, he came down with the help of a rope made by inter-twining scarves,” Sharma said.
