Three days after three under-trials were killed in an attack on a prison van in neighbouring Jhajjar, police have arrested seven men from a rival gang. Two more undertrials were injured in the attack on the van on Saturday.
Delhi police were probing recent incidents of carjacking and robbery in northwest Delhi when they chanced upon one Mohit (25), a property dealer. Police said his interrogation uncovered the bloody trail that had left prisoners Sri Bhagwan, Dilbagh and Anil Fauhji dead.
DCP (outer) BS Jaiswal said, "On sustained interrogation, Mohit disclosed that he was part of the gang which was involved in the deadly attack on a Haryana prison van transporting undertrials on the Gurgaon-Jhajjar road on March 10."
Police said Mohit also disclosed that some of his associates were likely to travel to adjacent Bawana to meet one of their leader-associate, Sandeep Kala, and may perpetrate some other crime.
Accordingly, the police set up a trap near Jaipur Golden Hospital in Rohini Sector 3 and a Santro car with the gang members in it was intercepted.
"They, however, hurriedly came out of the vehicle, some of them brandishing weapons, and opened fire on the police party. They were eventually overpowered," the DCP said.
The arrested men were identified as Sonu (25), Raju (27), Sanjay (25), Satish (25), Rohtash (26) and Jitender (22). Police said they have confessed to being involved in the attack on the prison van.
Police said the accused said Anil Rohilla, the gang's kingpin who is currently in prison after his arrest by the Crime Branch last year, had ordered the killing.
"Rohilla is operating his gang from the prison and on his orders, the gang of seven men had engaged a truck driver and attacked the prison van. They were armed to the teeth and their only objective was to eliminate the trio," said a senior police officer.
On interrogation, the gang disclosed having been involved in five case of car jacking and robberies in Delhi, in addition to eight cases of murder and six cases of robbery in Haryana, police said.
