Delhi Police on Sunday apprehended a teenager for sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl at a park in south Delhi’s Tigri Extension area.
Police said the 16-year-old confessed in custody that he lured the girl to an isolated spot in the park on Saturday evening and sodomised her. He was booked under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO)Act.
The girl, a class 1 student, is admitted at the AIIMS Trauma Centre with injuries to her private parts.
Her condition was “stable” after undergoing surgery , and she would be released from hospital after another three days, a spokesperson for AIIMS said.
While the girl’s family alleged she was gangraped by three men, police confirmed that only the juvenile was involved in the crime.
“The minor girl was sodomised by a minor boy known to her and he lives in the same vicinity. The crime is covered under the sections of rape and POCSO Act. We have apprehended the boy.” Prem Nath, DCP (south), said.
The girl was found lying in the park after passers-by heard her screams and rushed to help.
“One of them informed us, after which we rushed her to hospital. We have been told that three men lured her away while she was playing in another park with other children. Police have apprehended only one suspect,” her sister said.
Prakash Jarwal, the MLA from Deoli, said crimes were increasing in the area due to lack of proper policing.
“Police can prevent such incidents, but , I am sorry to say, such crimes are increasing. I hold the police responsible for this,” said Jarwal.
This is the second incident of rape in the national capital over the last three days. A 14-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by six men in Najafgarh area of southwest Delhi on Friday.
