A year after she was arrested —her third apprehension in four years -- for allegedly running an interstate prostitution racket worth several crore rupees, 25-year-old sex racketeer Sonu 'Punjaban' allegedly staged a suicide attempt to get back at Tihar Jail officials who recovered a mobile phone from her possession.

Jail authorities claimed the 'drama' unfolded soon after one of Sonu's co-inmates at ward number four at Tihar's jail number six claimed she had a mobile phone -- an offence in direct violation of prison rules, early on Monday morning.

“The allegation was made during routine morning checking. When Sonu was frisked, a mobile phone, in fact, was recovered from her before she was shifted to the adjacent ward number six as part of disciplinary action,” said a senior jail official.

Subsequently, sources claimed, Sonu got wind of the fact that jail authorities had informed the trial court of her misconduct.

Fearing being shifted into solitary confinement as punishment and to make things difficult for the officials who had 'told on her', sources said, Sonu staged the spurious suicide bid.

Sources said, she attempted to hang herself from the exhaust fan in her new cell, while making a ruckus around 9:30 pm.

“Though she was safe and sound, she was taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) hospital as per procedure. Hospital authorities intimated the local police about the incident around midnight,” the official said.

After being admitted, sources claimed, Sonu told doctors that she hadn't tried to hang herself but had consumed several sleeping pills after forced intra-prison relocation aggravated her 'depression and mental agony'.

Her medical examination, however, did not reveal any medicinal residue in her stomach or injury marks on her neck. According to doctors, Sonu was found to be 'perfectly oriented' and far from any sleeping-pill induced stupor.

“As per procedure, the inmate was kept under medical observation till Tuesday evening. A case of attempt to suicide will be lodged against her at the Hari Nagar Police Station soon,” said Sunil Gupta, spokesperson and legal officer, Tihar Jail.

According to sources, the special cell of the Delhi Police has been directed to investigate the case and Sonu's call detail record is being consolidated to ascertain whom she was trying to communicate with.
