Police sources say that the ACP’s killing has shaken the rank and file and policemen who have a history of encounters or have arrested high-profile criminals and terrorists are ‘very’ anxious, reports Vijaita Singh and Ravi Bajpai.

The Murder of controversial cop Rajbir Singh seems to have set the cat among the pigeons, at least for the Delhi Police.

As a result, the Delhi Police have ‘unofficially’ launched a parallel probe. Two teams of Crime Branch are working round the clock to ‘crack’ the case. The two ACPs leading the teams — Udaiveer Rathi and Sanjay Bhatia — interrogated the accused, Vijay Bhardwaj, for well over 40 minutes early on Tuesday. Rathi, who heads the Inter-State Cell of the Crime Branch, has himself arrested a number of high-profile criminals and is involved in encounters.

All this backstage activity is in stark contrast to Delhi Police’s official reaction on Rajbir’s death. Senior police officers remained conspicuous by their absence during Rajbir’s funeral on Tuesday. Not just that, no one has even come out with an official reaction on the murder even two days after the killing.

Officers are not convinced with Bhardwaj’s murder confession. “His statement is ridden with contradictions. He is also changing his statements regularly,” said an officer.

Police suspect that someone else may have orchestrated and implemented the attack. “If that indeed is the case, then we should know it. Several of our policemen were part of squads that have encountered criminals in the past. We need to ensure their safety,” said an officer.
