A day after Delhi Police claimed to have detained a local criminal for the murder of their son, Shobhit Modi's grieving family met Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday.
The family, which doesn't believe the police's theory that there was a strong possibility that 20-year-old Shobhit was murdered when he resisted a robbery bid while on his way home in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj on the evening of May 5, went with a request that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigate the case.
"We met her for a good 15 minutes during which we pointed out to her the fact that Delhi police have botched-up the investigations in Shobhit's murder. We don't believe that the man that they have in their custody is his murderer," said a family source, requesting anonymity.
According to sources in Delhi police, a local criminal identified as Deepak Malik, a resident of Rangpuri area, had been picked up for questioning on Friday and had confessed to the crime. But the Modi family has refused to accept either the robbery-bid theory or Malik's confession.
"We are investigating the case with due sensitivity and from the point of view of scientific and empirical evidence that can be produced in a court of law. No stone is being left unturned," said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south).
Meanwhile, the family claimed that the CM assured them of fair probe and said she would forward the request to the home minister.
