The Delhi Police arrested a notorious criminal wanted for several robberies and carrying an award of Rs 25,000 after a shootout near a Metro station in south Delhi early on Monday.

Akbar, alias Danish, who was active in south Delhi, was nabbed after a brief exchange of fire in Nehru Place around 2.30am but his associate Asif managed to flee, police said.

“He (Akbar) was wanted in many cases of robbery, theft, snatching and attempt to murder,” deputy commissioner of police (South-East) Romil Baaniya said.

Police had put up barricades in the area around Eros Hotel, close to the Nehru Place Metro station, after a tip off.

Around 2.30am, police saw two men on a Bullet motorcycle and signalled them to stop but they drove away. Police gave them a chase. On finding themselves surrounded, the two men fired at the police team, which returned fire. While Akbar was arrested, his associate managed to flee under cover of darkness.

Two policemen were hit but escaped injuries as they were wearing bullet-proof vests, Baaniya said.

Akbar was involved in a gunfight with them in December in Pul Prahaladpur after which a reward of Rs 25,000 was announced for his arrest, the officer said.
