The Delhi high court has sought a response from the Delhi government on a plea seeking a direction for filling up teachers’ posts in a school.

Justice Siddharth Mridul issued notices to Directorate of Education (DoE) of Delhi government and Air Force Senior Secondary School at Delhi Cantt in New Delhi and fixed the matter for hearing on January 20.

The court was hearing the petition of Ashok Kumar and Ram Kumar whose daughters were studying in the school.

The petition alleged that as many as 10 posts of teachers were lying vacant in the school.

“The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, has come into force in 2010 and in terms of the Act, there has to be proper pupil-teacher ratio in place within six months of the enactment of the Act,” said the petition, filed through lawyer Ashok Agarwal.

The inaction on the part of the “government-aided school” and the DoE has resulted into violation of students’ fundamental right to education.

There is a shortage of clerks and “teachers are seen doing clerical works,” it said.
