The number of accidents in Mayapuri has reduced by 50 per cent, thanks to the smart traffic initiative launched by the local police.
The road near Mayapuri scrap market that leads to Ring Road was prone to accidents. From May 2010 to May 2011, of the 50 people injured on the 3-km stretch, 21 died; while 30 accidents have been witnessed between May 2011 and May 2012. In these 30 accidents, 10 people lost their lives.
"Traffic police staff manage vehicular flow on roads, but we are also doing our bit. As the stretch leads to Ring Road, motorists usually drive at high speed," he added.
Another senior police officer said most of the accidents involved bikes and cars. "Local scrap dealers had created entry points for easy access. We talked to them and managed to close them," he added.
