Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s daughter-in-law Smita Thackeray had sent feelers to the Congress unit in Maharashtra before the assembly polls about joining the party. But there was reportedly no response at that time from the top leadership.
Now, in the wake of a newsreport on Saturday in which she praised Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and expressed a desire to join the party, the All India Congress Committee reacted guardedly.
“If the Mumbai and Mahara-shtra Congress agree, there is no problem in her joining the party,” said AICC spokesman Shakeel Ahmed.
If Smita, the estranged wife of Jaydev Thackeray, is allowed to join, it will be the first time that a Thackeray will come under the Congress umbrella.
