Social science faculty needs time to ‘change’

The faculty overseas subjects like history, political science, economics, geography, sociology and social work. Even the syllabus for BA (Hons) Social Work, which had been passed by the committee of courses, has been put on hold and a detailed discussion on it has been ordered.
“No course in the undergraduate stream was passed as the teachers and heads of departments present in the meeting were informed that their syllabi were not ready. The history department cited paucity of time while the other departments have not prepared any syllabus till now. The teachers and department heads have raised the demand for a uniform module for revision of the syllabus,” said KK Anand, associate professor, political science, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, who was present in the meeting.
Sources also said that the tone of the meeting, which lasted for more than five hours, was set by the letter sent by the Registrar to B Chatterjee, the department head for History. According to sources, the letter was intimidating in nature and threatened Chatterjee with legal action if the semester courses were not passed.
“All those in the meeting took strong exception to the letter. It violated the letter and spirit of DU’s ordinance. The faculty has also decided to write to the Registrar informing him about their displeasure regarding the letter,” said Saroj Giri, assistant professor, Political Science.
