The son of a Delhi police constable attacked a minor girl at her house in Mangolpuri on Friday with a kitchen knife, police said. The 24-year-old accused, a friend of the victim, slit the girl’s throat for pressuring him to marry her.
A police officer said they were friends for the past one-and-a-half years. Accused Rahul Kumar was arrested within three hours of the crime. The girl, who was rushed to a hospital, received 18 stitches.
The knife was recovered from a public toilet where he had hidden it.
Police sources said Rahul allegedly told investigators that the 17-year-old girl had been threatening him that she would file a rape case against him if he did not marry her.
Rahul told the police that he had asked the girl to wait till Durga Puja festival, when she will turn 18. “He told her that they should wait for marriage till he gets a job,” said a senior police officer. The police, however, said the claims cannot be verified until the girl records her statement.
“We only have Rahul’s disclosures in which he has blamed the girl for pressuring him for marriage. We are waiting for the girl’s statement,” the officer said. The girl’s father is a sanitation worker and her mother works with an Anganwadi centre.
The girl’s family rejected claims that she was in a relationship with Rahul. They accused Rahul of allegedly troubling her at several occasions in the past. Her brother said that a few days before Holi in March, Rahul had allegedly thrown chilli powder into the eyes of his sister and three more girls when they were in school.
The school principal had filed a complaint against Rahul at the local police chowki. Rahul was reportedly called to the police post and reprimanded for troubling schoolgirls. He was let off after he promised he will not do it again.
On Friday morning, the girl was alone at home as her parents and brother were out for work. Around 9 am, the officer said, Rahul reached at the girl’s home. “The got into an argument during which Rahul picked up a knife from the kitchen and attacked her twice,” the officer said.
The girl ran out screaming for help. She collapsed outside her house and fainted due to excessive bleeding from the cut on her throat. Rahul panicked and fled the crime scene with the knife.
The girl’s relatives, who live on the first floor of the building, rushed to her help. The police was informed about the crime and the girl was taken to the hospital.
“We spoke to her relatives about the crime and the identity of the suspect. Her cousin identified him,” the officer said.
Rahul was booked for attempt to murder. More sections of IPC and Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act might be added in the FIR after the victim presses more charges, said the officer.
Rahul’s father Dhan Singh is a constable posted with the security unit . His family lives in Sultanpur Majra area, some 400 metres away from the girl’s house.
