There was speculation that Rahul Gandhi would unfurl the national flag at the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road on Monday. This, because his mother and party president Sonia Gandhi was absent.
But everything went according to script.
Veteran leader Motilal Vora did the honours in presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Rahul said his mother is convalescing well after a surgery on August 4 at an overseas hospital for an undisclosed ailment. “She is much better,” said Rahul after the flag-hoisting function. He returned from abroad on Sunday, and unconfirmed reports suggested that he was attending to his mother.
Amid drizzle, Union ministers and senior party leaders turned up. After the flag-hoisting ceremony, the Prime Minister and Rahul distributed sweets to children present at the function. Then both of them went into a huddle with senior party leaders in Sonia’s room at 24, Akbar Road.
