Stating that empowerment of weaker sections and women has been the pillar of the government, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Monday announced that a special package is under way for the northeastern states. The package also aims to benefit women in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and give a fillip to the self-employment measures.
Speaking at the second anniversary of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) or the Aajeevika mission, Gandhi said the focus of the programme should be on central and eastern parts of the country.
Gandhi said that the target for the government in the next ten years is to free 7crore BPL families from poverty, ‘which is not an easy job’.
“But by adopting Aajeevika, many states proved that through women SHGs, socio-economic changes could be brought in the rural areas. The mission should now be spread quickly across the country especially in central and eastern India,” Gandhi said.
Gandhi stated that UPA’s initiatives for empowerment of women in Jammu and Kashmir through SHGs had shown positive results.
“In next five years, we hope to take this programme to two thirds of the families in the state. Similarly, a special package is being prepared for North Eastern states and hilly states like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh,” she added.
