In the aftermath of Afzal's hanging, plans of UPA chief Sonia Gandhi inaugurating the critical link in the Kashmir rail project have been postponed. No fresh dates have been finalised for inaugurating the 17.7 km stretch - that includes India's longest transportation tunnel connecting the Valley with the Jammu region.

Inauguration of link connecting Banihal to Quazigund - part of the Udhampur Baramulla Srinagar Rail Link project - was earlier scheduled to by March 31.While officials claimed that the postponement was on account of the safety certification not having been obtained, sources said that - following Afzal's hanging - the Centre was apprehensive that the law and order situation in J&K might take a turn for the worse and didn't want to take a chance. PM Manmohan Singh, railways minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah were expected to have been present at a high-profile function.
