The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) never refrains from making castles in air. The latest is the civic body's proposal to construct a mall in the already choc-a-block Greater Kailash Part I.
The proposed mall is to come up on a 2.5-acre vacant plot near Sapna cinema in GK I. According to the agency, this will help them fetch large revenue as the land is on a prime location.
"We have so many vacant plots in the city that come under our purview. The least we can do is to utilize them commercially. There is a plot in GK I and we can construct a mall there that will increase our revenue.
“I had raised this issue in the budget discussion too. A formal proposal has also been sent to the commissioner in this regard," said chairman of the works committee of the MCD, Mahender Nagpal.
However, experts point out that the already clogged roads will not be able to take any additional traffic load if a mall is constructed there.
"Constructing a mall is not a simple affair. The agency concerned should first create a traffic circulation plan, which has projections of traffic for the next ten years. The lanes near Sapna cinema are narrow and traffic congestion is a perpetual problem. If a mall is constructed, it will make things worse," said Rohit Baluja, president of Institute of Road Traffic Education.
According to Nagpal, the MCD has a total of 75 markets, some of which have been transferred by the land and development department of the government.
"There are many markets which are in a bad shape such as the Lodhi Colony market, Ajmal Khan market among others and that's why people don't frequent them. Either we should renovate and modernize them or bring them down completely and construct big shopping complexes" added Nagpal.
For some of the markets, permission will be required from the government, as the land has been transferred to the MCD by the Delhi government.
