Soon: View and pay your traffic fines online

Feel guilty that your traffic challans are pending just because you feel lazy to go and pay the fine? Well, a few months from now, you will be able to make use of the payment gateway option and pay all your fines on-line using e-banking or through credit cards.

Three weeks ago, Hindustan Times reported about e-challaning and how the Delhi Traffic Police are in the process of acquiring a GPRS-enabled hand-held device for their men on the roads to on-line prosecute and challan road traffic violators, specially repeat offenders.

The Delhi Traffic Police last week floated a tender for the same. And, taking a step further, they have incorporated an e-payment option for road users in it.

The idea is to develop a dynamic web portal for providing various traffic related services to the general public. Once operational, the public will be able to not just view pending notices but also have an option to pay on-line through credit cards.

“Anybody will be able to access the database and view status of pending challans. Online payment through credit cards and e-banking are initial options. We are also looking at enabling people to pay fine using the mobile phones,” said a senior traffic police officer.

As on date, the traffic police website does tell about pending challans when a user enters registration number of a vehicle whereas the new portal will also give them an option for paying the fine on-line.

“Of course, if anybody needs a hardcopy of the challan, he/she would be able take a print out of notice for compounding,” the officer added.

The e-challaning process is expected to be in place by the start of the next financial year. The new design portal being part of it, too, is expected around the same time. “We are hopeful, the system is in place soon,” the officer added.
