The South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Wednesday announced that it will open nursery classes in all of its 588 primary schools. The education committee passed the proposal in order to give preliminary education to children so they can fit better in the school atmosphere when they take admission in class I.

"Sometimes children who are directly admitted to class I are unable to grasp the lessons and lag behind in their class. The nursery classes will prepare them for an easy transition," said Satish Upadhyay, chairman of the education committee.

Upadhyay added that as there is no chance of students flunking till class V, average students may continue to face challenges in keeping up with her/his peers in later years.

At present, the corporation runs nursery classes in 329 schools where one or two rooms are dedicated to younger children. With the implementation of the right to education Act (RTE), municipal schools are under obligation to admit every student who wants to enroll there.

All over the city, the three municipal corporations provide free education to 10 lakh children.According to the new proposal, the schools may also run evening nursery classes to accommodate more students.

"Most students in our schools come from the economically weaker sections of the society who do not have fixed working hours. They can, therefore, have a choice between morning and evening nursery classes," added Upadhyay.

The corporation has also decided that it will hold motivational classes for teachers so they continue to teach well.
