The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has added over 500 people under the ambit of those receiving pensionary benefits in different wards.
The monthly pension is disbursed to the elderly, widows, destitute, handicapped and divorced women. As many as 520 people have been added as beneficiaries, for which the civic body will have to spend Rs 6 crore.
The civic body passed a resolution in its House meeting on Monday. Earlier, 700 people from each ward were being extended pension benefits. Now, the number has been increased to 750 per ward.
"There are thousands of people in the city who need such aid. So increasing the number of beneficiaries will help their cause and give the councillors of the south civic body more power to help the needy in their respective wards," said Mukesh Yadav, SDMC spokesperson.
The corporation gives out R1,000 as pension to each beneficiary. The total budget of the scheme, post-revision, will stand at R93 crore. Every pension applicant needs a nod from the local councillor to be eligible for getting money under the scheme.
