South Delhi wants more parking lots, multi-storey flats

The Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) 2021 is under review and it was the turn of south Delhi residents on Tuesday to give their suggestions on how the Capital should grow in the next decade.


Underground parking lots in parks, community centres, multi-storey flats in place of old Delhi Development Authority (DDA) flats and covering open drains to build cycle tracks were some of the innovative ideas that were placed on the discussion table at an open house organised by the DDA in south Delhi. The suggestions would be studied by an apex advisory body of the DDA during the review of the present MPD. After approval from the authority, the reviewed MPD would be sent to the Urban Development Ministry for amendment.

DDA had held an open house for west Delhi last week. Till May 29, it will organise such meetings each Tuesday. Next in the queue are west, central and east Delhi.

"The present MPD 2021 was notified in 2007 with a provision for review in five years," said AK Jain, former Commissioner (Planning), DDA. "The MPD should have been reviewed by February," he said.

Residents and RWA members from areas such as Greater Kailash, Vasant Kunj, Masjid Moth, Saket and Dwarka participated in large numbers on Tuesday and presented their views. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2012/5/09_05_12-metro2c.jpg

The DDA received nearly 200 suggestions during the day-long exercise.

Rajiv Kakria of the Greater Kailash I RWA spoke on growing commercialisation, not permitted under the present MPD, and suggested a check on mushrooming guest houses, curbs on the category of professionals allowed to work from residential areas and allow only residents to run shops from residential premises.

Parking was a major concern with Kakria suggesting that underground parking lots should be constructed below parks and community centres. Ranju Minhas of the Masjid Moth RWA advocated paid parking under flyovers.

Bodh Saraswat, a resident of Dwarka, said cycling and walking should be promoted by covering open drains.

People living in rural areas had slightly different concerns with residents of Mahipalpur demanding a sewage treatment plant and a stop on conversion charges.
