Samjawadi Party leader Kamaal Farooqi on Friday questioned if Yasin Bhatkal’s arrest was done on the basis of crime or religion.

“If he is a terrorist, he should not be spared. But, if he has been arrested because he is a Muslim, then we may be trying to malign the community’s image,” Farooqi said.

Both the Congress and the BJP slammed him for his comment calling it “ridiculous’ and ‘regrettable’.

“It is unfortunate that he is using religion to compromise the country’s security”, BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said. Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhury called the comment ridiculous, while Union Minister V Narayanasamy said terror had no religion. Later, however, Farooqi apologised for his “communal” remark.
