Special economic zones yet to take off

The Delhi government says it is feeling the pinch of the economic slowdown. Anticipating a fall in its revenue collections, the government is all set to take its grouse about pending notifications on special economic zones in Delhi to the Centre.

The Union Government had cleared six special economic zones (SEZs) for Delhi over two years back, but had failed notify all of them yet. Apparently, the reason behind the mess was confusion over the notifying authority.

“The notifications have not been issued because at one point the Union Law ministry was supposed to issue the notification, the law ministry said the commerce ministry should issue the notification, who in turn felt the Delhi government should just go ahead. These SEZs can go a long way in providing employment in the current scenario,” said a senior government official.

Of the six SEZs cleared in principle for Delhi, only one was notified – the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation IT Park in Shastri Park. “This project will be completed in two phases. The Delhi State Industries and Infrastructure Development Corporation’s Gems and Jewellery Park at Baproula is still stuck,” said an official.

Government officials said on one hand they were expected to find solutions for overcoming the slump, on the other projects have been stuck literally for the want of a signature. Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta, however, hoped the matter would be resolved soon.
