Speed claims one more life

Seventy-year-old registrar of Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Dr G R Sunder, could have never anticipated that his usual morning walk on Monday would lead to his death. A 70-year old morning walker was allegedly run over by a call centre cab at India Gate on Monday. The police, however, have not identified the vehicle but according to an eyewitness, the vehicle was a call centre cab.

The victim Dr G R Sunder was the registrar of Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, New Delhi. He lived on Kasturba Gandhi Marg and went for his ususal morning walk at 5:30 am. The accident happened around 5:40 am when a speeding call centre cab hit him from behind at Baroda House in India Gate. A passerby who saw it happen rushed to Sunder. He used the victim’s mobile phone to call up the numbers in it to get help.

“The passerby called up the family’s driver Ajay at 5:47 am and told him about the whole incident. He immediately called up Dr Sunder’s wife Kanchana and informed her about it,” said NT Gopal, their family friend. The victim who suffered severe head injuries was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

According to the family, the passerby said that he was right behind Sunder when the incident happened. The speeding call centre cab hit the victim who was at the corner of Baroda House. The car then sped off and the passerby was not able to note down the registration number of the vehicle.

Sunder had been the registrar of Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, New Delhi for the last 17-years. He was a renowned indologist as well. Professor NN Pillai, principal Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan College also known as SP College said, “He was an extremely private person. He has worked closely with the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi when he was the chief administrator at the Gandhi Smriti. We were just talking yesterday, I cannot believe he is no more.”

The director of Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, New Delhi AJ Veeraraghawan has declared a holiday tomorrow. “Both the school and the college will remain closed on Tuesday in his memory.”

The police have started their investigations and are on the lookout for the vehicle driver. “We have not identified the vehicle. The family has alleged that it is a call centre cab and we are looking into that possibility,” said a senior police officer.
