A 35-year-old woman was killed and her husband and two young sons badly injured when their speeding car crashed into a truck before being rear-ended by another truck on the GT Karnal Road at 3am Saturday.
The police said Umesh Gupta was doing 100 kmph when his black Chevrolet Spark rammed the right side of the loaded moving truck, took a sharp right turn and got hit by the second truck. Officers also believe Gupta may have fallen asleep at the wheel, making him lose control.
The hatchback was completely crushed and had to be cut open so its trapped occupants could be extricated.
Gupta’s wife Ritu was in the front passenger seat and died instantly. Their sons Bhuwan, 13, and Tapan, 10, were in the back. Gupta and Tapan are in critical condition at the Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh while Bhuwan is out of danger. The drivers of both trucks fled,
leaving their vehicles behind.
The four were on their way to their Janakpuri home in west Delhi. Gupta, who had recently quit his job at a tractor manufacturing company in Chandigarh, was moving back to the Capital before heading to Gujarat for another job, his brother Sushil Gupta told HT.
Additional DCP (northwest) Romil Baaniya said a case has been registered and all three vehicles impounded.
