A speeding Mercedes, driven by the son of a businessman allegedly under the influence of alcohol, ran into a Maruti SX4 car in north Delhi’s Keshav Puram area on Monday night, causing minor bruises to the driver.
The accident took place at 9.45 pm. The SX4 car was static at a traffic signal when the Mercedes rammed it from behind. The impact of the hit was so huge that both the cars got badly damaged.
The Mercedes bore a Delhi Legislative Assembly’s parking sticker on its front windscreen. The police are now trying to find out as to how the owner of the Mercedes had procured the official parking sticker.
The errant Mercedes driver, identified as Anish Garg, 24, had managed to escape from the spot immediately after the accident, leaving behind his four-wheeler. He was, however, arrested on Tuesday and was released on bail in the evening.
The driver of the SX4, identified as Harsh Bijoria, is a computer engineer from Delhi College of Engineering. Bijoria lives with his family in Ashok Vihar and conducts tutorial classes for school and college students. He was on his way to drop his two students to their homes in Shakti Nagar when the accident took place.
“Due to the powerful impact, the doors of the SX4 car were locked automatically and the occupants got out of the car only after locals broke the windscreen with stones,” said a police officer.
Meenu Choudhary, DCP (northwest) said that since the accused driver had fled and was arrested more than 12 hours after the accident, it could not be ascertained if he was driving under the influence of alcohol.
