A speeding truck crushed an eight-year-old student of Puran Public School, Aman Vihar Phase III, on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the police, the accident took place when Jyoti, a Class III student, was going home from school. "A few eyewitnesses reported that Jyoti was crossing the road when the speeding truck crushed her under its wheels. The driver sped away after the accident," said a police officer.
The victim was immediately rushed to nearby Bhramshakti Hospital where she was declared dead by the doctors. The police have registered a hit-and-run case against the driver and are searching for him. Jyoti was a resident of Pratap Nagar.
In another accident, a 44-year-old man was killed when a truck hit his scooter in Jahangirpuri on Tuesday evening. The police said the victim, Mohammed Saakir, was on his way back home when the accident happened. "He used to work at a Wazirpur Depot-based Utensil factory. Near the railway crossing, a speeding truck hit his scooter from behind. He died on the spot," said a senior police officer.
The locals, however, managed to catch the driver. The police later arrested the driver, Abdul Ansari, and confiscated the truck. A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against the driver.
In yet another accident, a woman was crushed to death by a tempo in Rajouri Garden on Tuesday evening. According to police, the victim, Rajmurti (62), had gone to a hospital to meet her relatives. When she was crossing the road, a speeding tempo hit her. The police arrested the driver and confiscated the tempo.
