A 29-year-old electronics goods retailer was mowed down by a speeding truck in northeast Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar on Monday night.

According to the police, the victim, identified as Shiva Dhalla, was returning to his residence from his shop in east Delhi’s Karawal Nagar area around 10.10 pm when he found himself between two trucks racing with each other.

“Shiva and his brother Aman, who were riding on two different bikes, had reached the Digambar Jain Temple located on the Loni Road in Jyoti Nagar, when a stationary truck on the right side suddenly accelerated and hit Shiva,” said a senior police officer.

“Shiva fell down, and while he was attempting to make head or tail of what had happened, another truck, which was allegedly racing with the first one, crushed him. Both vehicles then fled the scene,” the police said.

Meanwhile, a crowd of angry on-lookers started pelting stones at a police team that had come to take stock of the situation.

“We have arrested the errant driver, identified as Manoj, 26, a resident of Ghaziabad. The driver of the other vehicle is absconding and we are trying to locate him,” the officer added.
