A 40-year-old Delhi Police constable and an event manager from Assam were killed and four others injured after a truck driver went on the rampage in south Delhi in the early hours of Thursday.

The truck, loaded with iron coil, was moving at a speed of over 100kmph when it hit an Uber cab and subsequently rammed a police barricade and a Maruti Eeco car, killing the two.

The accident occurred around 12.40am near RK Khanna Tennis Stadium on Africa Avenue Road towards Bhikaji Cama Place in RK Puram. The deceased constable, Deepak Kumar, along with constable Jai Narayan, was looking for bike-borne snatchers in the area after receiving a tip-off. They had set up a barricade.

The 32-year-old event manager, who died in the accident, was in the Eeco car, with his colleagues from Nagaland. He worked for Ola. The Eeco driver and two others suffered serious injuries in the accident, police said.

After hitting two cars and a barricade, killing two men, the truck driver reversed the vehicle and fled towards Ring Road. There, he crashed into two more cars before coming to a halt.

The errant truck driver, later identified as Ram Kishan from Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, managed to flee. His helper, Rahul, was overpowered by locals and handed over to the police.

“We have registered a case of culpable homicide against the truck driver. The truck that was coming from Faridabad and going towards Naraina has also been seized. Our teams are looking for the errant driver,” said Nupur Prasad, additional DCP (south).

Prasad said the two constables were checking vehicles after setting up barricades in an S shape on the road. Around 12.35am, constable Deepak was standing behind the middle barricade, when constable Jai Narayan flagged down an Eeco cab carrying three persons.

The cab stopped near Deepak and he asked the driver to open its boot.

“Deepak was checking the Eeco’s boot when the truck coming from IIT side hit a Wagon R (Uber cab) from behind ahead of the barricades.

“The impact caused the car to crash into the divider at the right side of the road, but luckily nobody was injured. Instead of stopping, the truck driver tried to flee and in the process hit the barricade. He rammed it into Deepak before crashing into the Eeco car,” said Prasad.

Deepak and the Eeco car were dragged for over 10 metres on the road. The car overturned and rolled at least twice before coming to rest. One of the three passengers in the rear seat also died in the accident. He was later identified as Santosh Baro, an event manager from Assam.

The other two passengers, identified as KS Sura,30, and 20-year-old woman Easther Pongai, and Eeco driver, Raghunandan Singh, were rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre. Cabbie Vijay took them to the hospital in his Wagon R car. He had asked his passengers to deboard the vehicle.

In the meantime, the truck sped towards Ring Road and took a left turn towards the Hyatt Hotel. The speeding vehicle hit a Ford Endeavour and a Volkswagen Polo before coming to a halt.
