In a house meeting held on Tuesday, North corporation councillors complained that the civic body has been unable to curb encroachment even in flats meant for its own employees.
Several employees of the municipal corporations are waiting for an official accommodation since many former employees of the civic bodies continue to occupy these flats illegally. Councillors also alleged that some of these properties have been rented out.
“A number of former employees have not vacated the quarters post retirement. Many properties are being misused by the occupants,” said
Mahendra Nagpal, leader of the House in North Corporation.
The councillors also demanded action against the culprits. Since many of the staff quarters are in a bad state, they also want the repair work to start immediately.
There are 2,259 quarters under the jurisdiction of the North Corporation, of which 90 are lying vacant. Officials also conceded that some of the buildings were in a bad shape.
“We have conducted a survey of the buildings. Some of them have not been maintained for years due to shortage of funds. The 90 quarters have been declared dangerous. Their maintenance work will start soon. We have decided to rope in experts from the IITs to assess the buildings. The maintenance work would start after that,” said Additional Commissioner, Deepak Hastir.
