The weekend began on a blistering note for Delhi residents as the mercury hovered around 44.2 degrees Celsius till the afternoon, but light rains and cool winds brought down the temperature by almost six degrees Celsius in the evening.

Two Air India flights, AI 539 from Chennai and AI 408 from Patna, were prevented from landing for about 15-20 minutes at the Delhi airport by a thunderstorm in the evening.

“At 5.30 pm, the temperature came down to 38 degrees Celsius, whereas it at noon the mercury was above 44 degrees Celsius,” said a senior Met department officer.

The minimum temperature recorded on Saturday was 33.2 degrees Celsius. According to the Met department, Sunday could be pleasant in the Capital as there’s a possibility of light rain and thunderstorm.

“The mercury would remain between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius in coming week. The sky could be partly cloudy with the chances of light rain. The easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal are causing this pleasant change in the weather,” said BP Yadav, of the Met department.

During the past week, the temperature had risen to the highest this season when the mercury crossed 45 degrees Celsius.
