It's a dog's life, literally.

The police have arrested a dog lover for assaulting a neighbour and his family when they protested against his pelting stones at stray dogs on Wednesday.

According to the police, the man took to stone pelting after stray dogs in the neighbourhood reportedly snapped at his pet in west Delhi.

The incident occurred on Sunday night when Dura Ram, a small-time contractor, was sitting outside his Uttam Nagar residence with his wife (name withheld), son Dinesh Kumar and his younger brother Hari Singh.

"The family was just sitting around outside their home when they saw their neighbour Ashu Kohli pelting stones at some stray dogs on the street. When asked, Kohli said they had tried to injure his pet dog which he had been walking," said V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west).

Kohli's refrain, according to the police, was that the animals he was pelting stones at were street dogs and didn't belong to Ram and his family, unlike his pet dog who he loved.

Fearing that the stray dogs may get rabid after being pelted with stones and may even attack him or someone from his family, Ram reportedly requested Kohli to stop.

At this, Kohli got angry and asked him to mind his own business.

A heated argument between Ram and Kohli soon turned into a violent clash between the two groups after Kohli summoned his friends to his aid.

These friends have been identified as Irfan, Hashim, Nazir, Danish, Javed and Ikranam.

"Javed and Danish own a meat shop in the area. They were armed with a heavy meat cleaver when they reached the spot. Seeing Ram grossly outnumbered, his son Dinesh and brother Hari plunged into the melee in which they were injured," ACP Renganathan said.

"They had to be rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital after a call intimated the local police about the incident at 10:45 pm. Ram's wife too sustained injuries in the clash," the ACP added.

The seemingly minor street scuffle even saw the involvement of Javed and Danish's father, Babu Khan, who came to the aid of his sons.

He ended up seriously injuring Ram's wife on the head with an iron rod. While the police have arrested Ashu Kohli, Irfan, Nazir, Babu Khan and Ikranam immediately after the incident, Danish, Javed and Hashim are absconding.

"We have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder as well as under other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. We are looking for the absconding accused trio," ACP Renganathan added.
