"His case was a learning experience for us. The surgery conducted on him was done in a dramatic speed. We would have discharged him a week back but then he suffered extreme skin loss due to the piercing of the angle both at the entry and exit of his body. But now he has made up and he can go," said Dr Biplab Mishra, assistant professor, AIIMS Trauma Centre who headed this difficult surgery.

He said that the hospital had on earlier occasions received worse case than Dutta but not all survived. "Dutta withstood four hours of pain before he could be operated upon," said Dr Mishra.

He said that Ripley's Believe it or not, (a product of Ripley Entertainment Inc, that deals in bizarre events so strange that viewers might question the claim) has decided to carry Dutta's story to its viewers.

Doctors at AIIMS have sent Dutta's story with photographs to the New England Journal of Medicine.

He was brought to the hospital with an iron-bar projecting out from the anterior and posterior chest walls respectively. He was in excruciating pain with blood oozing out from both the entry and exit wound.

Dutta said, "When the episode had happened, I was shouting with pain. But by the time I reached the hospital, I was having difficulty in breathing and I was completely exhausted and had no strength to utter a word."

"When he was brought here, we saw that the rod had missed his vital parts, like the kidney and the heart," said Dr Subir Das, anaesthetist who made him fit for the surgery.
