Suspecting her of having an extra marital affair, a man, with the help of his two friends, shot at his 23-year-old sister thrice, critically injuring her.

Savita Kumari (name changed), who is a television journalist, was travelling towards Ghaziabad, along with her younger brother, on Sunday morning. Sunil Kumar, the elder brother and his friends Rajesh and Sudhir, stopped them midway near Durai and shot at Savita thrice. They fled the spot soon after the incident, police said.

The victim, who managed to call up the police through her mobile before falling unconscious, was later rushed to Yashoda hospital in Ghaziabad.

She had sustained critical bullet injuries in the chest and abdomen areas. Her condition was stated to be critical by doctors.

Badalpur police officials said the victim was married three-four years ago in Delhi.

She had later returned to her house and joined a local news channel in Ghaziabad as a journalist. “Her elder brother assumed she was friendly with someone he did not like and therefore, he shot at her on Sunday,” Inspector Amit Kumar said.

The victim had two daughters, who were reportedly living with their father in Delhi.

A case for attempt-to-murder was later registered against the three accused by victim’s father Sheesh Ram and her younger brother, police said.

The victim’s father later told reporters that his daughter was harassed by her in-laws for dowry.

“The motive for the shooting is yet to be substantiated. We are searching for the accused and are hopeful of nabbing them soon,” Superintendent of Police (Rural) Atul Saxena said.
