A group of social and religious leaders on Thursday called for expedited criminal procedures against those indicted by the Liberhan Commission while questioning the exoneration of former Prime Minister Narsimha Rao of all responsibility in the Babri Masjid demolition.

Led by the All India Milli Council (AIMC), the group also said a new charge sheet against the responsible with the new facts and figures mentioned in the report should be taken into consideration.

AIMC General Secretary Mohd Manzoor Alam said while the conclusions drawn by the report are "bold" its recommendations are "mousy".

"The conclusions were on anticipated lines and stamp the facts that the media and other groups brought to light in that period... But the recommendations bear no resemblance to the forthright conclusions preceding them," he said.

He said all people whose names have been included deserve to be brought to justice through "expedited criminal procedures" because they violated the Constitution and betrayed the Supreme Court.

"After indicting 68 individuals for bringing the country to the brink of communal disaster, it does not call for filing of charges against them nor does it speak of expedited criminal proceedings," he said.

Questioning the "clean chit" to the then prime minister Narasimha Rao, Alam said, "Rao had assured the nation from the Red Fort that it was his government's duty to protect the historical mosque" but he failed to prevent the demolition. (MORE)
