The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is falling short of approximately Rs 280 crore in advertisement revenue for the financial year 2009-10, claimed a councillor during the civic body’s budget finalisation discussion on Saturday.
Councillor from Kashmere Gate Uma Sharma demanded to know the reasons for the huge gap in the expected revenue as against the actual collection.
“The target expected was approximately Rs 300 crore for the year, but in reality, only about Rs 20 crore has been realized till November 2009,” Sharma pointed out.
“Above this, another Rs 23.41 crore is yet to be recovered from various advertisement agencies,” she claimed and demanded to know the reasons.
Councillor Sharma also demanded to know why the civic body’s ambitious plan of erecting about 2,000 kiosks across 12 zones was allotted to a single agency?
“If the work was allotted to 12 different agencies, there would have been no hurdles,” she added.
Councillors from various parties voiced their opinions, suggestions and criticism of the MCD’s budget proposal for the year 2010-11, which would be finalised on Monday.
Vishnu Swarup, councillor from Sangam Vihar, complained about non-availability of funds for sanitary services in his area.
“My area is entirely an unauthorised colony. Whenever I ask for services, equipment, the officials always say there is no budget for you,” he said.
“Why cannot you make a budgetary provisions for such areas?” he asked.
Similar demands were raised by four other councillors from areas that have large number of unathorised colonies.
Councillor from Chhatarpur Chandra Kiran Tyagi suggested that students’ scholarship of Rs 1,000 should be extended to all economically weaker students and not just restricted to those from minority communities.
