An 18-year-old Delhi University student of northeast-Indian origin was allegedly molested by a taxi driver in southeast Delhi on Monday night, police said.
"The complainant and two of her friends were returning after attending a party at a popular hotel in the area when the incident occurred. Since it was close to 3:30 am when they left the hotel, they decided to hire a cab," said a senior Delhi Police officer.
Police said the cab arrived at 3:45 am on Tuesday and two girls sat in the rear seat while one sat on the seat next to the driver's.
"They were on the way when the cab driver, identified as Hoshiar Singh, attempted to molest the girl sitting in the front seat," the officer said.
"They made Singh stop the cab, threatened to take legal action against him and asked him to drive back to the hotel. In the meantime, we were alerted about the incident by one of the girls," the officer said.
Police said Singh was received by a police party waiting at the hotel and arrested.
"We have booked him under relevant sections of the IPC and are investigating his credentials. A case has been registered at the New Friend's Colony Police Station," the officer added.
