A teenage student of a private school had to be rushed to a hospital with a damaged eardrum after his English teacher allegedly slapped him repeatedly for reporting five minutes late to his class on Wednesday, the boy’s family said.
A Class 10th student of Navyug Convent School, Jharoda Kalan, Najafgarh, 13-year-old Abhijit Kumar was in fact made to suffer more torture as the teacher forced him to sit through out the day with severe pain in his ear, alleged Abhijit’s family members. Abhijit, whose father publishes a local newspaper, reached five minutes late in the morning when his teacher, Sanjay, objected, said Abhijit's family.
“He abused him in front of a packed class and asked him to wait at the door. When Abhijit apologised, Sanjay slapped him under his left ear. Abhijit said his ear was paining but Sanjay continued to thrash him,” said Abhijit's brother Avinash.
There was more. Abhijit reportedly told the teacher his ear was paining severely and he wanted to go home. “Sanjay didn’t listen to him and forced him to sit till 4 pm,” said Avinash.
It was a little late by then. Abhijit's condition deteriorated further and his family took him to the Rao Tula Ram hospital. “We were told there were no senior doctors available late night and kept us waiting,” said Avinash.
Junior doctors said Abhijit would be referred to the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya hospital for consulting a senior specialist since his eardrum was severely damaged and even bleeding slightly, said Abhijit.
A senior doctor came in later. “He advised some medication and we brought Abhijit back. I think we will take him to Ganga Ram hospital now,” said Avinash.
Avinash said police didn’t register a case of assault saying they couldn't take action since the hospital hadn't issued his medical report.
“We called the Police Control Room and an officer met us. But no action was taken,” said Avinash. Police however said the family had left the hospital when they reached. Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest) Shalini Singh said they hadn't officially received any formal complaint till late Thursday.
