Teachers seek support of Class 12 students

Teachers protesting against the semester system have now decided to intensify their stir against what they call the ‘imposition of the semester system’ in the Delhi University.

Members of the Joint Action Body (JAB) have now decided to approach students who are giving their Class 12 board exams and talk to them about the demerits of the new system.

“These are the students who will be most affected by the drastic change the university is not ready for. They need to be told why the system is harmful so that they have all the information before applying to the university. Students come here from the best of schools and deserve to know what choices they are making,” said Nandita Narain, a JAB member who teaches Mathematics at St. Stephen’s College.

The members of the body are also planning to meet the students’ parents as they believe that the quality of education will go down drastically if the semester system is implemented without taking a look at the infrastructure of the university.

“Parents need to be informed about the changes as they are the people who will get directly affected from of it. We will also talk to resident welfare associations,” Narain added.

The JAB also met the president of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, PL Puniya, on Tuesday and presented him with a representation on the adverse effects the system will have on students from the reserved categories.

“Students from reserved categories will suffer the most as they take more time to get integrated into the system. OBC admissions go on till September-end. How will these children cope? Many of these students suffer from language barrier and more time needs to be spent with them. In the semester mode, this will not be possible,” said Saumyajit Bhattacharya, who teaches Economics at Kirori Mal College.

The body is also planning to meet members of the Commissions for STs, OBCs and the disabled, and make a representation to all of them.
