Team Anna's campaign against corruption will have a new dimension – crushing of people’s right to protest against land acquisition --- when Anna Hazare starts his fast from August 16.
People’s protest is spread from acquisition of land for Posco in Orissa, for Jaypee in Greater Noida, for Adani in Chindwara, Madya Pradesh, for Jindal in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, for Mundra port in Gujarat and against Tata in Orissa. In most of these cases, the protesters have faced police action and some of their leaders have also been arrested.
“Acquisition of land against wishes of people is another form of corruption perpetuated by the governments and our campaign is against all sorts of corruption,” said Arvind Kejriwal, a member of Team Anna, on the day Orissa government declared using children in protest against Posco as “illegal” and deployed police to land acquisition.
With this, the civil society groups from different parts of the country supported Hazare’s August 16 fast but some of them had reservation against Baba Ramdev joining the protest.
“There should not be any scope for Ramdev joining the protest,” said Dr Sunilam, who accused the Baba of betraying them after declaring his support for their protest against Adani’s Power Plant in Chindwara. “He instead went to teach yoga to Kamal Nath (area MP and Union minister) who is supporting the power plant,” he said.
While Sunilam was most vociferous voice against Ramdev other civil society groups also showed some discomfort with he joining Anna’s protest. Many were vary of Ramdev’s real intention behind his campaign against black money as it was a bogey initiated by senior BJP leader L K Advani.
It had it implications with Team Anna deciding to impose certain conditions on Ramdev to join the protest which included that Ramdev cannot use the platform against the government for eviction from Ramlila grounds and call his RSS sympathizers. In the late evening Ramdev was not categorical on whether he will be joining Anna Hazare on August 16 at Jantar Mantar or not.
Kejriwal described the government’s draft okpal bill as Pota for NGOs as it allows the body to investigate on any complaint against NGO.
“The government’s lokpal will investigate into complaints against 65,000 class I officials but will have powers to look into activities of NGOs even at the ground level,” he said, asking the civil society to join hands to fight against the government’s lokpal bill.
Most civil society members agreed with Team Anna that it was informal emergency like situation as peaceful protests of people are being crushed.
Wrong info by govt
Team Hazare on Monday charged the Centre with giving an inaccurate version of the civil society draft of the lokpal bill and demanded that it be placed before the all party meeting on July 3.
In a letter to the joint drafting panel chairman and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, the panel co-chair Shanti Bhushan has objected to the comparative analysis released by the government, saying anyone reading it will be completely in the dark about the provisions of their version of lokpal.
