Team Anna members Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal on Monday joined hands with film director Mahesh Bhatt to condemn the arrest of Gujarat riots victims and social activists. They were arrested while Narendra Modi was on his fast in Ahmedabad.
This is for the first time that Bhatt has come together with members of Team Anna, after he had criticised Hazare’s movement against corruption at a press conference in the Capital last month.
“We condemn the undemocratic and arbitrary detention of riot victims and activists, who were protesting against the state government of Gujarat and Narendra Modi’s ‘sadbhawna mission’ in Ahmedabad,” said a statement signed by Bhatt, Bhushan and Kejriwal, among others.
The Gujarat Police on Sunday detained around 50 activists and riot victims, including social activist Mallika Sarabhai, lawyer Mukul Sinha and other persons at Naroda Patiya, preventing them from holding a silent protest against Narendra Modi's fast.
“We believe that curbing people’s right to protest peacefully is a suppression of democracy, and we condemn this unjust action of arresting peaceful protesters by the Gujarat government,” the activists said in the statement.
