A day after a four-hour power cut grounded all operations at Delhi airport's Terminal 3, a thorough technical audit of the terminal's power supply scheme would be conducted to identify shortcomings.
India's biggest and best terminal plunged into complete darkness at 1.25am on Sunday, affecting 66 departing flights and 11 arrivals, which got delayed by five to six hours. Around 2,500 passengers, including those who were told to stay outside the terminal in the dark, were affected.
In a double whammy, first the power transformer feeding the terminal tripped, leading to interruption in power supply and then a spark in the back-up diesel generator (DG) sets meant no power supply at the country's busiest airport for four long hours.
Though power failures are not new at the airport and T3, this is the first time even the backup failed to work. A spokesman of the private airport operator Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) said though the DG sets were started as soon as power supply failed, a spark occurred and the sets were disconnected from the system as a safety measure.
According to sources, the ministry of civil aviation reviewed the incident in a meeting with DIAL officials on Monday and asked the operator to appoint an independent technical auditor to review the power system.
"Following the incident on Sunday, we have undertaken all remedial steps to restore full power supply and ensure smooth continuity of all operations at IGI airport," a DIAL spokesman said.
A technical committee appointed by DIAL on Sunday has started the investigation to find out detailed causes for the disruption and suggest preventive measures, if any are required.
"The preliminary investigations indicate that the tripping of the transformer was due to a fault in the busduct, which is an extremely rare occurrence," the spokesman said.
"We are also appointing an independent technical auditor to review T3 power supply scheme and provide its findings," he said.
