Asha’s father Suraj Kumar Saini and uncle Om Prakash have been arrested, police said.

“The girl had been staying at Om Prakash’s home in Swarup Nagar since her May engagement,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.

The Sainis runs a wholesale vegetable business. They had reportedly tried everything to keep their daughter from “bringing disrepute to a Saini household”, said a police officer.

When their threats failed, Asha’s family forcibly got her engaged to a property dealer in Sonepat, Haryana. When that didn’t work, Asha’s family called Yogesh to Swarup Nagar on Sunday on the pretext of discussing their relationship.

“The couple’s mutilated bodies were found from the house around 7:30 am on Monday after residents complained of an intense, foul smell emanating from the ground floor of the two-storey house,” the officer said, adding prima facie, it seemed “after four hours of assaulting the couple with iron rods and other blunt weapons, they forced them to sit on iron trunks and used live electrical wires to electrocute them.”

Yogesh’s sister Renu said, “The girl’s mother, Maya, came to our house two months ago. She threatened to get Yogesh killed if he didn’t stop meeting Asha. My brother consented, but Asha kept calling and asking him to take her away.”
