In a tragic incident, a 35-year-old woman and her 10-year-old son were crushed to death by a speeding tempo in Paschim Vihar area of West Delhi late on Wednesday night.

According to the police, the accident took place around 11:00 pm near Peeragarhi Chowk when the victims were crossing the road.

Police said the deceased, Ruhi Anjum, a resident of Peeragarhi area, was returning home along with her husband Haidar Ali (41) and son Hamza Ali.

The police said the family had gone to attend a function at their relative’s house in Pitampura.

“The three de-boarded a bus near the Peeragarhi Chowk bus stop and started walking towards their residence. Near the Peeragarhi Chowk flyover, a speeding Tata-407 tempo hit the mother-son duo when they were crossing the road. Haidar, who was following his wife and son, escaped narrowly,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The police said that the woman died on the spot and her son died in Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital.

According to police, after hitting the victims the errant driver tried to escape from the spot along with the tempo.

He was, however, caught by a constable who was present at a police picket near the spot.

“As soon as the errant driver fled the spot the constable, P.D. Prasad, took a lift on another tempo and chased him. Prasad intercepted the tempo around 500 meters away from the spot and nabbed the driver, identified as Gopal. A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against him and he was arrested,” added the officer.

The tempo has been impounded as well.
