The blind couple found murdered in their home on Tuesday were reportedly killed by their tenant. Ashwani (24), the blind couple's tenant, and his friend Gaurav (21) have been arrested for the murder.
The couple had reportedly objected to the accused bringing their girlfriends to the room and has asked them to vacate.
The victim Rajender Verma (55), who retired from Jawaharlal Nehru University, and his wife Sudha (50) were found murdered in their Vivek Vihar residence in East Delhi.
While Verma was smothered, Sudha was strangled with a wire.
The police had suspected the involvement of Ashwani, who had rented a room on the second floor of the victims' home on July 25. He was missing after the incident.
The police arrested Ashwani from Baghpat on Tuesday. He is resident of Nangla Reva village in the district. Gaurav was apprehended on Wednesday.
Additional Commissioner (East) K.C. Dwivedi said, "Ashwani told police that he used to bring his girlfriends to the rented room. The couple used to object this and also to the fact that he had not paid them rent. They had asked him to vacate the room. This enraged Ashwani and he planned to kill them. He asked Gaurav to help him."
On Tuesday night, both of them consumed alcohol and allegedly murdered the couple.
Son of an Ayurveda doctor, Ashwani is currently unemployed. Gaurav was pursuing an animation course in Janakpuri.
The incident came to light when Hema, one of their three daughters, called them up at around 5 a.m. on Wednesday.
"When she did not get any response, she called up Amit Rana, a neighbour of the victims.He went to check on the couple and discovered the bodies," added Dwivedi.
As both the accused were unemployed they decided to rob the victims as well.
The police said they ransacked the whole house and took away almost Rs 50, 000 in cash and jewellery. The police have however recovered the articles.
