Tension broke out in a northwest Delhi locality on Tuesday after a mob attacked a police post and damaged several vehicles alleging that a person was beaten to death by police personnel.
Angry residents hit the streets Tuesday morning alleging that police had beaten up one Kamaluddin, resulting in his death, a charge strongly denied by the police which said it had not detained or arrested him.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Manish Aggarwal, police received a call about a man throwing stones at passing vehicles in Prem Nagar in Sultanpuri area at around 3.55 am, after which it reached the spot.
He claimed that when the police personnel reached the spot, they found local residents thrashing Kamaluddin. They rescued him and rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. Police described Kamaluddin as a mentally deranged person and claimed that one autorickshaw driver whom it identified as Rajender was injured in stone throwing by him.
Rajender has been admitted to a hospital, Aggarwal added. Residents of the locality said they saw Kamaluddin being taken away by the police and the next they heard was that he had died, sparking rumours that the 22-year-old was beaten to death by police.
The mob damaged couple of motorcycles and police vehicles parked outside the Prem Nagar police post by pelting them with stones and even setting them of fire. "The situation is under control now and we have arrested some persons in this connection," Aggarwal added.
