Information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari on Monday said the country’s media institutes could weigh the option of holding common entrance test for journalism courses, along the lines of management or engineering schools, which could help improve media-education standards.

“I think a good starting point would be that rather than possibly prescribing curricula which is then standardised across institutions, possibly the media industry could think about at least having a common exam,” the minister told a discussion held by the Centre for Media Studies Academy.

He said that media professionals could also have an industry-regulated licence system for practicing journalists.

“Like you have a bar exam, like you have a medical exam or exams conducted by other professional bodies, which then issue a license, which enables you to pursue your profession,” Tewari said.

He said there might be a case for “standardisation” in the media industry as it attracted people from various professions.
