The Commonwealth Games saw a different MCD at work. One focussed on keeping the city spic-and-span. Here’s what MCD commissioner KS Mehra has to say about it.

We saw a different MCD at work during the Games. Sanitation workers worked round-the-clock to clean the streets. How did the work-culture change overnight?

The Games were a unique opportunity to prove that the MCD has the potential to rise to the occasion. There has always been a vast potential in MCD officers and workers. Added to it were the feelings for the nation. As MCD was entrusted the work at a short notice, there was some delay in arranging food initially. Knowing that their work involved the nation’s prestige, the workers said they would work even without food. That was the spirit that delivered the goods and made the city feel proud of its workers.

Did the quality of work improve with senior officials supervising work?

All our Additional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and supervisory staff worked as one to ensure that MCD performs to the best of its abilities.

The MCD gave its staff uniforms for the first time. Did this help? MCD provides uniforms to its staff. They were provided aprons carrying the printed words MCD. They were visible as MCD employees. It gave them a sense of belonging.

Have any instruction been given to officer to carry out daily inspections?

All senior officers have standing instructions to carry out regular field inspections.
