Meeting people during his door-to-door campaign in DDA double-storey flats in Welcome area, Arvinder Singh Lovely does not make any promises.
He, however, makes it a point to personally meet as many voters as he can and request them to vote for him on the 29th.
“I am not one of those who make tall promises before elections and then disappear. People know what I have done for this constituency and they will surely vote for me,” said Lovely, who won two elections from Gandhi Nagar assembly segment.
“Though this area has been added after delimitation, it has always been a Congress-dominated area. I am getting good response,” he added.
Not many voters seemed convinced. They argued lack of performance of the previous MLA has turned the tide in favour of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate.
“We have been requesting the DDA to allow us to get these flats converted into freehold properties. The Congress MLA did nothing to support us,” said Md. Nasir, a resident of the area.
Lovely, however, seems to be playing his cards well. To woo voters, he took up some development projects. “Lovely has improved streetlights. He has funded the construction of boundary wall. We hope he’ll solve our freehold problem as well,” said resident Anand Prakash.
People of the area that Lovely represented for 10 years are also of mixed opinion. The shopkeepers of Gandhi Nagar are happy about Lovely supporting them when MCD teams were sealing residential properties being used for commercial purposes.
“It was because of his efforts that the MCD allowed commercial use of residential properties on Gandhi Nagar main road. Electricity and water supply have also improved,” said Ashok Jain Jaichanda, senior vice president, Association of wholesale readymade garment dealers, Ashok Bazaar, Gandhi Nagar.
While Lovely boasts of taking up several development projects, some residents said he never completed those works. “The swimming pool he got constructed in the DDA Park has not been commissioned. An underground water reservoir in Shanti Mohalla was started when he contested his previous election. It is not complete yet,” said Rajeev Gupta.
BJP candidate Kamal Jain is confident of his victory. “People are terrified of the Congress and the sitting MLA. Whoever raises a voice gets his house raided by BSES officials. People are ready to throw the MLA out,” he said.
