Three persons were arrested for allegedly betting during the just-concluded international cricket tournament, the crime branch said on Monday.

Identified as Naresh Thakkar, 27, Ajay Satija, 36, and Hemant Kumar, 34, the men were operating a betting syndicate during the India-West Indies-Sri Lanka Tri-Series cricket matches at a house in north Delhi's Burari, said Ravindra Yadav, additional CP (crime).

"A raiding party was constituted after a tip off that a person named Naresh would be betting during the India Vs West Indies match along with his associates," said additional CP Yadav.

"During the raid, three men were found operating the betting racket. They were feeding details in a laptop regarding the said match in a specially-designed betting software 'BacknLay'. During scrutiny of the laptop, records of several punters in addition to entries of recently-placed bets came to light," the police said.

Two mobile phones being used for placing/receiving bets were also recovered.

"Thakkar revealed that he owns a readymade garments shop in east Delhi's Gandhi Nagar and, in 2012, had come in contact with and got 'inspired' by some bookies. Thereafter, he started his own betting racket with the help of his friends Shammi Sharma and others," additional CP Yadav said.

While Satija acts as Thakkar's assistant, Kumar runs a garments shop in Gandhi Nagar, police said.

"He said he has been in contact with Thakkar for the last three years but had started betting only three months ago. We have constituted several teams to get our hands on a Laxmi Nagar-based man who provided these men with the technical know-how for their syndicate," Yadav added.
